Favorites for Fall Home Decorating

Today for our Seasonal Design Series, I’m excited to share some of my favorite home decor items to use for Fall decorating! I’ll be sharing how I’ve used some of my go-to basics in the past — like wreaths, trays, pedestals… and of course a few pillows and throws! I’ll also be showing you some new things I’ve ordered and some super cute things I’ve found that you can grab online! Everything is on the affordable side, with a few exceptions… because sometimes a little splurge is called for!

 

WREATHS 

Wreaths are readily available, come in many sizes & price-points, and are so easy to use to add an instant festive air to you home. Inside or out!

Below are a few favorite wreaths & sources:

  • HomeGoods. My hands down favorite. I’ve had the best luck over the years finding wreaths that are a great quality, at an affordable price. 

  • Grandin Road has amazing wreaths. If you can invest in them, they are exceptionally good quality. 

  • ETSY. I’m seeing handcrafted wreaths that are lush, full and just gorgeous!

Here I’m sharing some of the ways I use wreaths in my home:

  • Hang a wreath on an old chippy vintage screen. I love the contrast here against our brick wall. Love this look? You can see more [just click here]

  •  On the covered porch down at The Little Cottage, I layered a wreath on a vintage green chalkboard. Want to see more of The Little Cottage? [just click here] 

  • Another way I love to uses wreaths, is to layer them on a cake plate or pedestal! Then I add a hurricane or lantern in the center. It’s a really simple way to create a centerpiece in a few short steps! I’ve done this for several different seasons.   • You can just catch the side of the Fall leaf wreath I’ve got hanging on my mug rack in this photo. Wreaths can help add a nice natural element to your home decorating, and they also provide some softness to vignettes or spaces that can otherwise feel hard or too linear.

  • Here, I hung my richly colored Autumn wreath on a DIY pallet wood backdrop. If you are looking to add more depth to your design, or need to beef up the look of your wreath, try layering it front of and old fence section, shutters, a window, or some other type of simple architectural salvage. It’ll add more weight to your design, without taking away from the beauty of your wreath. 

 

TRAYS

Decorator trays make it as fast & easy as popping a few things on a one for an instant vignette! You can choose wood, metal or woven basket trays. All have a particular flavor to them with texture, finish and color variation. You can even make your own.

  • I find trays all over — from thrift stores and tag sales, to both brick and mortar and online shops. Almost every home decor retailer sells trays. I’ve got a variety of all the materials I mentioned above. 

  • Tray uses — You can use trays on basically any flat surface! Use them on counters, islands, console tables, coffee, side and accent tables. As well as on beds and ottomans.

TROUGH BOXES & DOUGH BOWLS are also very simple decorating staples, often just calling for a little filler, and maybe some candles.

Pedestals & Cake Stand

There’s nothing like elevating something to make it feel special, and if it’s got a glass dome over it, even better! 

For more than just cakes, these pedestals offer great opportunities for making tiny vignettes, woodland scenes… and in Winter, frosty snow villages.

TAKING STOCK

Recently I mentioned that I wanted to buy less quantity, and instead, to thoughtfully invest in higher quality items for future home decor purchases. I started this season by getting the new Bluma throw and matching pillow cover from Pottery Barn. I chose the Tobacco color, and I’m thrilled with them! I didn’t have anything in this rich shade, it’s so decadent! 

And like many of you, I bought the look-for-less gold mirror from Decor Steals. Arhaus and Anthro both have a several hundred dollar version, and I’m excited to use mine in the coming months! I’ll still be looking for the best deals, I’m just going to be more thoughtful with what I purchase.

After purging my home decor storage room [see my reveal here] I recognized that my tastes have changed, and there are things I no longer feel the pull to own. I plan to resist, and instead to just appreciate how cute they are in the store, and leave them there!

This season, both Joann & Target have some really cute Fall decor, and much of it is available online and for contact free pick up. 

TIPS

Looking for ways to save? 

  • Buy NEUTRAL BASICS that can be used for everyday and seasonal decorating.

  • Try thrift stores for core items like candle holders, baskets, lamps, vases, and more! 

  • Spray paint can be your BFF, adding rich metallic shades to decor for Fall. 

  • I’ve found the majority of my COPPER out junking, at garage sales and thrift stores. If you don’t mind a little patina, it’s a great place to start.

  •  Have a home decor trading party with family and/or friends.

  • Buy craft supplies and make a lush wreath for a a fraction of the cost of high end stores.

  • DIY it — There are tutorials out there for almost everything imaginable. If you’ve got free time, why not try before you buy? 

  • Forage — get free natural elements from nature!
