How to Use the Easter Shape Matching Cards
You can use the Easter matching shapes during whole group or small group time. Once the children understand what to do, the shapes work well in your math center, too.
The main way we’ve used the Easter shape cards is for matching. Tell the children they need to help the bunnies find their carrots! To do this, the kids have to find the carrots that are the same shapes as the bunny rabbits. Give the kids an example as needed, showing them how to match the circle rabbit card to the circle carrot card.
Then it’s onto the matching fun. This can be accomplished in a few different ways. Here are some ideas:
- Place the rabbit shapes on one side and the carrot shapes on another. Work with the children to find a carrot for each rabbit.
- Hold up a shape manipulative and have the kids find the matching carrots and bunnies.
- Challenge the children to find other shapes around the classroom for each bunny and carrot pair.
- Pair the shape cards with bunny shape mats. After the kids make the big bunnies, they can place the corresponding small rabbits and carrots on the mats.
- Give each child a shape card. Encourage them to find the classmate with the matching shape.
- Place the Easter shape matching cards in a simple sensory bin. The kids can hunt through the sensory materials to find the cards before matching them. A carrot garden sensory bin or a rabbit sensory bin would be perfect for this!
As you can see, there are many ways to explore matching shapes with the bunny and carrot cards. Do you have any additional suggestions to add to this list?
More Ways to Use the Easter Shapes Printable
Of course, you don’t just have to use the shape cards for a matching activity. I know I keep calling them Easter shape matching cards, but don’t let that fool you! Touch on shape formation with the kids after fully exploring basic shape identification. Here are a few ways to do that:
- Use glitter glue to outline the shapes on each card. Let the glue dry. Then have the children gently run their fingers over the shapes to explore how the shapes are formed.
- Let the children use dry erase markers to trace over the laminated shape cards.
- Place play dough out with the cards. Kids can use the play dough to trace over the shapes or make the shapes near the cards.
- Leave the black-and-white shapes unlaminated. Give the children their own sets of the cards. The kids can color in the shapes found within the bunnies and carrots.
- Pair the bunny and carrot shapes with white boards or chalkboards. Kids can use the cards as visual prompts for drawing the shapes!
No matter how you use the Easter printable, I’m sure your students will get a lot of shape learning out of them. You can discuss the names of shapes, as well as the shapes’ characteristics, with any of the ideas shared above.
What’s Included in the Easter Shapes Printable
The Easter shape matching printable comes with four pages. One page contains carrot shape cards, while another page contains the bunny shape cards. The remaining two pages are black-and-white versions of the cards.
Due to space constraints, not all shapes are available on the printable. In the future, I might add more shapes. But right now, these basic shares are included as both bunnies and carrots:
- circle
- square
- triangle
- rectangle
- oval
- hexagon
- trapezoid
- pentagon
- octagon
So it’s a small printable, but it really packs a punch when it comes to learning and exploring the concept of shapes with young kids.
